Wisteria...

This wisteria vine has never bloomed in the 10 years I've had it. And I've had it ---Off with it's head I say! I've tried every trick in the book except shovel pruning. Shovel pruning is when you ram the shovel into the dirt around the base of the trunk about 1.5 ft. out slicing through the roots. It puts the offending plant into shock and maybe into getting it's act together. In this case blooming. I pruned it every year. I gave it a good shaking every day for 9 mos. one year. I withheld nutrients and water. I don't know what else to do. The foliage is beautiful in the spring but as summer progresses it gets a bit ratty which I could live with if it bloomed. Any suggestions before I call it quits?

If you click on the photograph to enlarge it you will see the snail god Escargod. I put his likeness there to pay homage to him in the hopes that he would send his snail and slug minions some place else. So far I've had as much success with that as I've had with getting the wisteria to bloom. None. Oh well, as I say to Chloe, onward Garden Warrior!

I thought I was the only one who was having trouble with wisteria :-) I have had two of them for about ten years also and cannot get them to bloom.Tried all of the tricks to get them to bloom, even moved them twice for more sun.Have been thinking of chopping mine down but would love so much to have one to bloom.I feel your pain :-)

Hi Lona,
I am ever hopeful that this year will be the year it will bloom.I'm finally giving up hope though.

I can only suggest that it you prune it super hard right now as i have had success with these stubborn buggers by doing so now. Don't give up! am currently growing one from seed into a tree form and know that i will have to wait at least another 5 years (I'm three years into this project) before seeing bud #1. Growing impatient, i pruned it hard this last weekend. one step behind shovel pruning which def risks the plant. Yours is a beauty but fo erth blooms - don't give up, get rough! Good luck.

You have a lush wall of green in front of the house, though blooms would always be welcome. What would you replace it with, if you took it out?

Hi Oaklandish and Northern Shade,

Thanks for your comments. I think I'll try Oaklandishs suggestion of a hard prune job rignt now and give this wisteria one more year. If I decide to take it out next summer I would replace it with a wisteria from the nursery that is in bloom when I buy it. I see them every year and am sorly tempted to buy one.

Is that my problem? I haven't paid my proper respects to Escargod??? Too funny!
