Bloom Day

Well, here's what's blooming this January 15th. It's been about 70* for a few days now and no rain in sight even though it's usually our wettest month. It's been really nice for pruning the roses. Usually it's wet and about 40-45* in Jan. and the last thing I want to do is prune the roses.

A Forget-me-Not poking through the leaves. I'm leaving the leaves on the ground this year and putting bark or mulch over them to help retain moisture.

One of my favorite primrose. I love the way it changes from pale yellow to pink as it matures.

Another primrose...

And another...

The name of these is escaping me. (not unusual for me)

And more primrose.
This warm weather we're having is setting records all over the bay area.Even though I'm enjoying it, I hope it gets cold soon because the stone fruit and nut trees (in the central valley) need a good long chill in order to set fruit.

You have nut trees?!

I love primroses, but I don't have any right now. They were kind of hard to come by at my nursery this fall, for whatever reason...and they don't perennialize reliably in my garden. I've never had primroses as nice as these tho'. I just get the cheap-o bedding plant varieties.

This warm weather is fine, fine, fine with me. We always get some kind of heatwave in January. Everyone disagrees with me, but a heatwave comes every January. I have the same conversations with the same people, every year. Last year's January heatwave was not so memorable. This year's is more memorable than most.

I am told by the curator of the SF Botanical Garden that the city's worst cold comes in February. That has long been my feeling too.

Welcome to Bloom Day! I hope this will be the first of infinite monthly bloom days from you. :)

Boy, I do hope you all get some rain this winter since this time of year is your only chance. I would love some of that 70 degree weather though! Your primroses are just fabulous. I've seen them on several blogs and am now thinking I'll go back to the big box store and get a few. Even if just for the house in winter (I'm thinking they won't survive our summers). Happy Bloom Day!

A nut tree sounds like a lot of fun. I had a walnut tree once upon a time, but the squirrels got all the walnuts. It made great firewood when the tree came down though. I also used to go to Sonoma in the fall and buy a shopping bag full of walnuts for $5 from a local roadside stand and have walnuts until the followng fall. mmmmmmm.... walnut tarts...

Now that my son is off the computer let me appologise for creating the misconception that I have fruit and nut trees! I was thinking of the tens of thousands of fruit and nut trees in the central valley here in California. I should have said that in my blog entry and I'm going to change the entry right now. So, again, sorry about that and thanks for your comment!

Your flowers are just beautiful. I'm sure they're enjoying your little "heatwave" as much as you are.

Hi Abigail, so sorry to be late to coming here to tell you how much I love your primroses! You must have the magic touch with them, for they look so lush and healthy!
